A Better Hemp Oil for Modern Applications

At Blue Sky Hemp Ventures, our journey with hemp seed oil began the way it does for most - cold-pressing high-quality, food-grade Canadian hemp seeds to create a rich, green oil loaded with nutrition.

But as our customer base grew and diversified across food and beverage, personal care, and nutraceutical industries, we kept hearing the same feedback:

“We love hemp oil’s nutritional value, but we need something with a milder flavour and longer shelf life.”

That feedback sparked an important question: What if we could create a hemp oil that kept all the benefits—but none of the barriers?

The answer: Refined Hemp Seed Oil.

Let’s start with the original. Cold-pressed hemp seed oil is made by mechanically pressing raw hemp seeds without the use of heat or chemicals. This minimal processing preserves much of the natural flavour, colour, and nutritional profile of the oil.

It’s:

  • High in Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids
  • Rich in chlorophyll, giving it a dark green hue
  • Earthy and nutty in flavour
  • Prone to oxidation and rancidity if not stored properly
  • Best used raw (in dressings, smoothies, or drizzles)

Cold-pressed oil is an excellent option for direct-to-consumer retail or gourmet applications, but for commercial use—especially in large-scale food manufacturing or cosmetics—it presents challenges:

  • Short shelf life
  • Low smoke point (~160°C / 320°F)
  • Strong flavour and odour
  • Inconsistent colour and clarity

Enter: Refined Hemp Seed Oil

Our Refined Hemp Seed Oil (RHSO) was developed to overcome the limitations of traditional hemp oil—without compromising its key advantages. It’s still rich in essential fatty acids and 100% plant-based, but the experience is completely different.

RHSO undergoes a proprietary refinement process that removes impurities, waxes, and other compounds responsible for strong flavours, odours, and instability. The result is a light, golden oil with a neutral taste, a high smoke point (~205°C / 401°F), and a significantly longer shelf life (18+ months).

The result? A clean, consistent, and scalable oil that performs beautifully in commercial kitchens, packaged goods, personal care products and high-volume production—where reliability and versatility matter most.

Why We Developed It

Our decision to produce refined hemp seed oil came from real-world demand:

  • Food companies wanted a clean, plant-based oil that wouldn’t overpower recipes.

  • Skincare formulators needed a lightweight oil that wouldn’t discolour creams or lotions.

  • Beverage developers needed an oil that could be blended without separation or strong aftertaste.

  • Export buyers needed a hemp oil that could withstand international shipping and long storage times.

By refining the oil, we made hemp a more functional and approachable ingredient—broadening its use across industries that previously couldn’t accommodate cold-pressed oils.
